I’ve been in the maritime industry for a year and a half, working as a Sole Deck/Stew responsible for both interior and exterior maintenance. From detailing the boat to ensuring smooth operations on deck, every day brings something new. Life at sea has introduced me to incredible destinations and amazing people from around the world — the travel and the friendships are what I love most about this career.

But this journey hasn’t been without its challenges. As a woman working toward deckhand roles, I’ve often faced assumptions that I’m “just a stewardess.” It can be incredibly frustrating when people underestimate my abilities or strength simply because of my gender. Working on a small vessel with only my captain for company has also tested my mental resilience. Days at anchor, long crossings, tight deadlines, and the constant uncertainty of where we’re headed next can take a toll. The isolation was the hardest part — having no other crew around and no way to step off the boat when I needed space. Managing the entire vessel alone taught me discipline, strength, and the importance of prioritizing mental health.

If I could advocate for one change, it would be to challenge the sexist assumptions that still exist at sea. Being a woman does not make me any less capable or knowledgeable. Equality means respect for skill and work ethic, not judgment based on gender.

To women starting out in this industry, my advice is simple: don’t let anyone take advantage of you. Stand up for what’s right, even when it’s difficult. If a situation feels wrong or unsafe, you don’t have to stay — your happiness and safety matter most. Find a vessel and a crew that align with your values and goals.

My time at sea has only just begun, but it has already shaped me into a stronger, more grounded person. Yachting is not for the faint-hearted — it demands toughness, discipline, and mental strength. Yet, through every challenge comes growth, unforgettable memories, and the pride of saying, “I did that.”
