Thays De Gracia, 3rd Deck Officer – Panama
I’m a watchstander from 0400-0800, my responsibilities include assisting for maneuvering on board cruise ships, watchstanding, safety procedures, and navigation. Working on a Carnival Cruise ship is so much fun, the knowledge and the experience we get in every maneuver is beyond compare. I am also in charge of the lifeboats safety inspections every month and assist my seniors officers with any other technical inspection.
My favorite part of my job is being able to make decisions based on my knowledge and experience as well as watch the infinite sea and the horizon for every sunrise and sunset.
Working in the maritime industry always brings some gender based challenges, everyone thinks we are the weak gender, but it has helped us to be empowered and prove our abilities and strength in all the areas of this field.
One change I would like to see in the industry is a stop to the discrimination around the world in any company when it comes to hiring female seafarers. We all deserve equal opportunities.
My advice to other female seafarers is never give up, difficult times make stronger people.
