Winfred Gituma, Oiler – Kenya

I’ve been working as an Oiler since 2022, shortly after graduating. My responsibilities are wide-ranging and include cleaning and painting duties, wiping spills, assisting with bunkering operations, responding to emergency drills, standing engine room watch, and supporting machinery maintenance under supervision. Every day presents new challenges and learning opportunities, which keeps the job exciting.

What I enjoy most about this career is that there’s always something new to discover. Beyond the technical skills, I get to see the world while doing something I love. That combination of growth and adventure makes this profession deeply rewarding.

The biggest challenge I’ve faced so far was securing a cadet placement. As a graduate from Kenya, it was difficult to find opportunities, even with the right qualifications and skills. I had to accept a rating position and commit to a longer sea time compared to other cadets. While it wasn’t the path I initially envisioned, it taught me resilience and reminded me that persistence pays off.

If I could advocate for change in this industry, it would be for greater inclusion of women, especially in senior officer positions. Too often, female seafarers must work twice as hard to prove their potential compared to their male colleagues. True equality means not just opening doors for women but ensuring they are recognized and supported when they step through them.

To women starting out in this career, my advice is to keep going and believe in yourself. Don’t limit yourself in the beginning — experience comes with time, and every challenge you face builds the foundation for your future. Seafaring is not an easy profession, but with patience, determination, and faith in your abilities, you will get there.
