Flora King, Deck Officer Cadet – Australia

I am currently a deck officer cadet and my focus right now is learning onboard which includes navigation, safety and maintenance while studying the theory behind the industry at a nautical academy.

My favourite part of the job is meeting new people. I love meeting new people and understanding more about different cultures all around the world.

Unfortunately in this industry it is very common to face gender based challenges and I have faced some since entering the field. I believe that my opinion and opportunity as a training officer was disregarded solely based on my gender.

Rather than change anything for women, I would advocate to educate male seafarers on women/equal rights and the ways they can create a safe and equal working environment for the women they work with.

My advice to other female seafarers is to concentrate on yourself, be proud of how far you’ve come and remember you got yourself there.
