I have been in the maritime industry for a year and a half, currently serving as a Deck Cadet. My role is that of a trainee officer, focused on gaining the experience and knowledge needed to become a certified Third Officer. My daily duties include navigation, deck maintenance, safety routines, and cargo operations, all performed under the supervision of the Chief Officer. Every day brings new lessons and challenges, and I’m constantly learning the discipline and responsibility that come with life at sea.

What I love most about this profession is the travel and the connection with the ocean itself. Who doesn’t love exploring new ports, discovering different cultures, and tasting foods from around the world? But the true magic lies in the sea — waking up to a golden sunrise, watching dolphins dance alongside the vessel, or seeing a night sky filled with stars brighter than anywhere on land. These moments remind me why I chose this life.

Being a woman at sea, however, comes with its challenges. I often feel I have to work twice as hard to earn the same recognition. When a man makes a mistake, it’s seen as human error; when I do, it can reinforce outdated stereotypes. It takes constant professionalism and resilience to prove that competence has no gender.

If I could advocate for change, I would call for better maternity leave policies, more flexible sea-shore rotation programs, and properly fitted safety gear for women. Ill-fitting uniforms, lack of privacy, and limited security facilities can compromise both comfort and safety. These structural changes are essential to making ships more inclusive workplaces.

To women starting out, my advice is built on three pillars: Mastery, Mindset, and Network. Learn proactively, work hard without fear of tough tasks, and build connections that uplift you. Respect is earned through action — by showing up, staying curious, and never giving up.

At sea, I’ve learned that women don’t seek special treatment; we simply seek fairness. We belong here as professionals, capable and strong. The respect earned through effort and perseverance is the greatest reward of all.
