Mihaela Gizea, Officer – Romanian

My journey at sea has been one of challenges, growth, and self-discovery. I began as a deck officer, full of ambition and excitement, knowing life on board would test my limits. The sea taught me discipline, responsibility, and resilience—but also confronted me with moments that tested both my skills and my strength of character.

As a young female officer, I often had to prove myself twice as hard, pushing through stereotypes and earning respect in a demanding, male-dominated environment. Fatigue, long contracts, and difficult situations sometimes made the journey feel heavy, but those experiences shaped not only my career but also my outlook on life.

Amid the struggles came incredible rewards. I witnessed breathtaking places, met people from around the world, and found my greatest companion—my husband, who has supported me ever since. These moments remind me that while the sea challenges you deeply, it also gives back in ways you never expect.

One of my greatest lessons has been the importance of speaking up for equality at sea. Women should never remain silent when faced with injustice or mistreatment. They belong in this industry and deserve respect, safety, and fair opportunities. I encourage women to work hard, stay strong, and pursue their goals with confidence, while never hesitating to seek help when needed. Choosing a reputable company with clear safety and anti-harassment policies is also crucial to ensuring well-being on board.

Though I have stepped away from sailing, my support for women in maritime remains unwavering. I want them to know that perseverance, integrity, and self-belief will take them far—whether as cadets carrying out tough tasks or officers leading with courage.

Looking back, I am proud of how far I have come. The sea has been both a teacher and a test, shaping me into a stronger and more confident woman. My hope is that more women will continue to step aboard, steering their futures with courage, dignity, and the conviction that they truly belong at sea.
