When I was 15 years old on a “quinceañera” trip on a cruise ship, I realized that I wanted to drive a ship and I discovered my dream of becoming a deck officer that then with effort, sacrifice and hard work it became my job and passion . As soon as I finished high school I started a maritime career in the International Maritime University of Panama. It took 4 years and 1 cadet year to be an officer. My last contract I did as 3rd officer 0000-0400 / 1200-1600 my responsibilities included: Co navigator , assistant watchkeeper , assist during the maneuvering , assist safety officer during inspections and maintenance of live savings as well follow all the SMS Company Procedures.

What I love about my job is that there is nothing I dreamed more than being in the profession that I am in today and the future that is coming. I love what I do, because I do not feel like I am working. I feel like I am doing what I love. I am a dreamer of life. There is nothing in this field that women can not do. I encourage everyone to follow their dreams and work hard to achieve their goals. The satisfaction of being in the position you wanted is priceless.

Yes, during my career I faced a couple challenges because of my gender. It was not easy at that time but day by day it helped me to become the strong seafarer that I am today.

Girls and women are safe when they are free from sexual and gender-based violence. Gender-responsive health systems that uphold girls’ and women’s essential rights to health throughout their lives, and promote safe, healthy, and functioning societies and strong economic growth and development. This is what I’d like to see more of in the maritime industry.

For all the women seafarers never give up , every day is a chance to learn and grow step-by-step and do things the correct way. We are strong and hard working. Always do your best, there’s no limits.
