Samantha Morris, Purser – UK
Currently, I am an experienced purser with 12+ as a seafarer. I am also a Mental Well-being Coach & Natural Solutions Provider.
In my early 20’s I used to look out of my bedroom window at the rainy days outside and think there must be more to life than this. I wanted to travel the world, but a little apprehensive about doing it alone I decided to apply for a job on a cruise ship as a Finance Manager so I could combine my passion for numbers with my longing to travel and had the bonus to be paid to do so.
Today as an Experienced Purser within the Yachting industry I am responsible for ensuring the smooth and effective operations of the Yacht. I am accountable for all financial, administration and crew management onboard. I oversee purchasing, inventories, accounting and all PA aspects to the Captain. Aside from my regular duties I am positively promoting crew well-being onboard and ensuring that our home away from home is a happy environment to be in #MentalHealthAwareness.
I see myself as a prime example of what can be achieved when you persevere and never give up on your goals. I love helping others to succeed and make their dreams become realities.
In 2021, I became an active member of the Mental Health in Maritime Culture of Care working group and most recently I have been appointed as a council member for the Professional Yachting Association. Both positions allow me to be the “voice” for seafarers and to ensure the correct working practices are in place to support crew when they need it most.
As a Mental Health First Aider, I believe it’s prevalent to ensure each current and future seafarer is trained in either Mental Health Awareness or Mental Health First Aid. The STCW should be ratified to make this inclusive.
I believe that going into schools, colleges and universities is a must to educate the future generations about the opportunities that a career at sea can provide.
