Chelsa Maria George Paula, Deck Cadet – India

My name is Chelsa Maria George Paula, and I have been in the maritime industry for three years, currently serving as a Deck Cadet. As a trainee navigating officer, my responsibilities span many areas of ship operations. Each day, I assist in navigation, take part in deck maintenance, help with the upkeep of LSA and FFA equipment, and support cargo operations. I’m also involved in safety drills and emergency preparedness, while assisting the Chief Officer with paperwork and documentation. Every task is part of learning what it means to become a capable and confident officer.

What I enjoy most about my profession is the sea itself. The ocean has become a second home to me—calm, powerful, and endlessly fascinating. There’s something about the vast blue horizon that makes every challenge worthwhile.

If I could advocate for one change for female seafarers, it would be the design of boiler suits. Properly fitted workwear may seem like a small detail, but it affects comfort, mobility, safety, and confidence onboard. A uniform designed with women in mind is a simple yet meaningful step toward better inclusion.

To women starting out in this industry, my advice is this: be bold but humble, strong yet empathetic. Life at sea isn’t easy, but the woman who navigates it with discipline, dignity, and gratitude becomes a beacon for others who dream beyond the shore. The journey may be demanding, but the growth, resilience, and perspective it brings make it deeply rewarding.

The sea teaches patience, courage, and character—and with every passing voyage, I’m grateful to be learning and becoming more of the seafarer I aspire to be.
