Aminat Adebayo, Deck Cadet – Nigeria

I have been in the maritime industry for over two years, working as a Deck Cadet. My journey at sea has been one of growth, discipline, and constant learning, shaping me into the seafarer and future deck officer I am becoming.

As a Deck Cadet, my role is to support the safe and smooth operation of the vessel while learning the full duties of a deck officer. On a daily basis, I assist with bridge watchkeeping, monitor the ship’s position, and support navigational tasks such as chart corrections and log entries. I also take part in deck operations including mooring, anchoring, cargo work, and routine maintenance. Each day on board is an opportunity to learn from senior officers, gain hands-on experience, and build the skills needed for my career.

What I enjoy most about life at sea is the adventure, structure, and constant learning. No two days are the same. I enjoy the responsibility that comes with watchkeeping and knowing I play a role in keeping the vessel safe. The teamwork on board and seeing my own progress have made this journey incredibly rewarding.

Like many seafarers, I have faced challenges. Being away from family, adapting to long working hours, and learning in a high-pressure environment have tested me. As a cadet, everything is new, and staying confident can be difficult. However, these experiences have helped me grow stronger, more disciplined, and more resilient.

If I could advocate for any change for female seafarers, it would be creating a more supportive and inclusive environment on board. Women should feel safe, respected, and valued. Stronger policies, better reporting systems, and equal access to training, mentorship, and opportunities are essential.

To women starting out in this industry: believe in yourself. Stay open to learning, ask questions, prioritize safety, and never give up. The sea will challenge you, but it will also strengthen you and prove that women can thrive here too.

Life at sea has taught me patience, strength, and resilience, and I hope my journey inspires other women to embrace the sea with courage.
