Tuğçe Ceren Duman, Chief Officer – Turkey

My name is Tuğçe Ceren Duman, and I am from Turkey. I have been working in the maritime industry for 10 years and currently serve as a Chief Officer. My journey at sea has been shaped by responsibility, discipline, and continuous professional growth.

In my role as Chief Officer, I am responsible for safe navigation, voyage planning, watchkeeping duties, and cargo operations. I also ensure compliance with international maritime regulations and oversee safety procedures on board. My daily work includes coordinating with the bridge and deck crew, maintaining deck equipment, conducting inspections, and ensuring operations run efficiently and safely. The role demands focus, leadership, and accountability, and I take pride in these responsibilities.

What I enjoy most about my profession is the responsibility that comes with working at sea and being part of a professional team in an international environment. Safely navigating vessels, overcoming operational challenges, and continuously improving my skills are the most rewarding aspects of my career.

One of the main challenges I have faced is working in a traditionally male-dominated industry, where female seafarers sometimes need to prove their competence more than their male counterparts. Time away from home and demanding schedules have also been challenging, but these experiences have strengthened my resilience, professionalism, and confidence.

If I could advocate for any change for female seafarers, it would be equal opportunities based on competence rather than gender. Increased awareness, mentorship programs, supportive onboard policies, and clear reporting systems are essential to creating a more inclusive industry.

To women starting out in this profession, my advice is to believe in your abilities, stay disciplined, and continue improving your skills. Do not be discouraged by stereotypes. Confidence and strong knowledge will open doors.

Working at sea has taught me resilience, leadership, and responsibility. I hope my journey encourages more women to believe they belong in the maritime industry and can succeed through competence and determination.
