Cinderella Baluran, Ordinary Seaman – Philippines
I have been in the maritime industry for three years, with my current role as an Ordinary Seaman. My day-to-day responsibilities include deck maintenance and assisting with cargo operations, ensuring the vessel remains safe and well-maintained. Each task teaches me something new and brings me one step closer to my goal of becoming an officer.
What I enjoy most about my profession is the opportunity to travel the world and experience different cultures. Being at sea allows me to meet people from various nationalities and learn from their diverse perspectives. These connections remind me that teamwork, respect, and open-mindedness are essential when working in such a dynamic and multicultural environment.
One of the biggest challenges I face is managing my time as I work toward my next career milestone. Balancing my duties onboard with studying on the bridge requires focus and determination. Still, I see it as part of the process — every challenge helps me grow stronger and more prepared for the responsibilities ahead.
If I could advocate for change, it would be the establishment of a zero-tolerance policy against gender-based violence, harassment, and discrimination. A safe and respectful workplace is essential for all seafarers, and strong, enforceable reporting systems are necessary to protect and empower women at sea. Creating such an environment would not only improve equality but also strengthen the entire maritime community.
To women starting their journey in this field, my advice is to never give up on your dreams. The beginning will be tough, but perseverance will lead you to the life you once prayed for. Take each step with confidence and keep learning along the way.
As a female seafarer, I initially struggled to adjust to a male-dominated environment, but through teamwork, support from colleagues, and prioritizing safety, I’ve learned to adapt and thrive. With determination and resilience, anything is possible at sea.
