Ishika Chopra, Trainee Marine Engineer / 4th Engineer – Haryana

I have completed two contracts in the maritime industry, sailing for over eight months as a Trainee Marine Engineer (TME), and will soon join as a Fourth Engineer. My responsibilities have included assisting engineers in the maintenance of the engine room, monitoring and recording machinery parameters, and helping with regular inspections and repairs. Each task has given me the chance to build my skills and gain a stronger understanding of ship operations.

What I enjoy most about this profession is that no two days are the same. With every contract, I meet and work with new people, each bringing different knowledge and perspectives. This diversity creates a dynamic learning environment. The maritime industry is limitless in terms of knowledge, and the opportunity to learn something new every day is what makes life at sea so exciting for me.

My journey has not been without challenges. On my last ship, the language barrier was a real obstacle. Effective communication is critical onboard, especially in such a technical and safety-driven environment. While it was sometimes difficult, the experience taught me patience, adaptability, and the importance of teamwork that goes beyond language and culture.

If I could advocate for change, it would be to ensure that women at sea are given equal opportunities across all jobs. Even today, there are tasks some hesitate to assign to women, which can be frustrating. I see every task as an opportunity to learn and grow, so I believe women should be trusted with the same responsibilities as men. Breaking down these barriers will create fairness and help women develop fully as professionals.

To women starting out in this field, my advice is to be confident, consistent, and committed to learning. Knowledge is your greatest power, and it will carry you forward in your career.

Life at sea is not as simple as it looks from the outside. It requires courage, patience, and sacrifice. But for those who trust themselves and take pride in their work, it offers resilience, growth, and the chance to truly thrive.
