Merve Yolcu, Second Officer – Turkey

I have been working in the maritime industry for three years, with my most recent role as a Second Officer. My daily responsibilities include ensuring the safe navigation of the vessel, voyage planning, and managing nautical charts. I also serve as the ship’s medical officer, responsible for maintaining inventory, processing requests, and inspecting medical supplies.

What I love most about this profession is the limitless nature of the maritime industry. Each day brings opportunities to learn something new, and professionalism pushes you to expand your knowledge continuously. Working with multicultural crews and experiencing different countries has not only enhanced my skills but also enriched me personally, shaping me into a truly international professional.

The path, however, has not been without challenges. At the start of my career, I struggled to find opportunities simply because I am a woman. Once onboard, I encountered biases questioning my physical strength and often felt the need to take on extra tasks to prove myself. Over time, I gained valuable experience and developed management skills that helped me overcome these prejudices. Today, I no longer feel compelled to overcompensate. Instead, I manage my responsibilities within professional boundaries and let my competence speak for itself.

If I could advocate for change, it would be the establishment of true equality within the industry. It is not enough to increase the number of women onboard; fairness in promotions, workloads, and opportunities must also be guaranteed. Bias and discrimination should have no place in a sector that relies so heavily on teamwork and professionalism. A safe, supportive environment will not only empower women but also strengthen the industry as a whole.

To women entering this field, my advice is to support one another and protect your rights. Do not stay silent in the face of unfairness. Know your rights, assert yourself, and remain open to learning every day.

Working at sea has taught me resilience, adaptability, and the true value of teamwork. It is a profession without borders, offering growth at every stage.
