Theresia Mwapangasha, Marine Motorman – Namibia

I’ve been a seafarer for nine years, starting in the fishing sector, then marine mining, and now oil and gas as a Marine Motorman. My role is to keep machinery and systems in the engine room and auxiliary spaces running safely and efficiently. I monitor temperatures, pressures, and oil levels, update the logbook, and check for leaks or unusual vibrations. I assist with maintenance on purifiers, auxiliary machinery, and sanitary systems, support overhauls and bunkering, handle sludge transfers and water testing, and manage housekeeping and waste disposal. On a Semi-Submersible Rig, no two days are the same, which keeps me challenged and always learning.

What I enjoy most is knowing my work keeps the vessel running smoothly and safely. I thrive on troubleshooting, working hands-on, and collaborating with a team where everyone relies on each other. The variety of tasks means there’s always something new to master, which makes the role deeply rewarding.

Like many women in technical fields, I faced early doubts during cadetship training. Professionalism, communication, and technical knowledge were essential to breaking barriers and earning respect. The physical demands were another challenge, but I focused on building endurance, learning proper techniques, and relying on teamwork. Over time, consistency and competence proved stronger than stereotypes.

If I could advocate for change, it would be for a maritime industry that is inclusive and supportive of women: properly fitting safety gear, equal training opportunities, health and wellbeing support, and zero tolerance for discrimination.

My advice to women joining the industry is to believe in yourself and never let gender diminish your value. Stay physically and mentally fit, seek opportunities to grow, and know your rights and safety regulations — safety must always come first.

One of the most rewarding parts of my career has been working with crews from across the world. Seeing different cultures unite as one team, committed to keeping the vessel safe, has been truly inspiring.
